#MADMlinkup: Risks

This week’s post is short and sweet. I’m making a difference this week by stepping out of my comfort zone and heading to New York City on Thursday for a few days on a mission trip. There are 34 ladies from my church heading to NYC to do some Urban Ministry with an organization called NYSUM (New York School of Urban Ministry). We will be taking care packages to the homeless, doing makeovers in one of their women’s shelters and basically just loving on some of the people in the city who feel marginalized and forgotten. I’m excited, nervous and anxious all at once. I haven’t gone on a trip like this in years. Well, I’ve never gone on a trip quite like this. My last mission trip experience was in 2004 (or was it 2003) to do eye clinics in Honduras. In the decade since that trip, I’ve never felt really “led” to go on another trip. Although, this one wasn’t a leading as much as it was feeling like it was a good idea. I don’t know, maybe they’re the same thing?

I’m never excited to leave Tim and Madi for long; they are home. But, I love that I have a spouse that fully supports me and fully supports me doing these kind of things. I know how blessed and lucky I am. I’m looking forward to some quiet time with God, reflecting, connecting and getting outside myself in a real, tangible way!

So, that’s me doing my best to make a difference this week. It’s exciting and challenging. My friend Sarah is going,  along with Jenni and a bunch of others, as well. I’m sure we’ll have lots of stories when we get back!

Have you ever gone on a mission trip? What was the most important thing you said or did while you were there?

  1. This is fantastic, Emily! Can’t wait to hear all about it! Prayers & best wishes as you serve the least of these!

  2. Hey Emily! I went to NYC on a mission trip right after 9/11. It was there that the Lord revealed to me how weak my faith was in Him. It was the first time I talked with people who thought I was flat out crazy to believe in Jesus. I was like 13 and lived in a really small town. Now I know plenty of people who think I’m nuts! 🙂 I still remember conversations I had with people who were in the World Trade Center the day it happened. Praying that you the Lord would use your love in a mighty way. Can’t wait to hear the stories. Blessings, Lauren

  3. Emily, what an awesome missions trip! I hope everything went well and I hope you’ll be sharing an update soon. I’d love hear how it went. I’m really excited to get to know you and the other ladies in the Becoming a Better Writer Community Group more.
